So if you’re looking to travel the world, while saving money or paying off student loans, and getting valuable, marketable international work experience, you’re in the right place! All you need is a TEFL certificate, and you’re on your way. I know it’s easier said than done with all the options out there, but I’ve sifted through the junk so that you don’t have to! Here’s an ITTT review: everything you need to know about the best TEFL course in 2023.

Why Teach English Abroad?

When I was growing up, all I wanted was to be able to see the world. I knew, however, that it wasn’t as simple as just buying a ticket. I knew that I would have student loans and bills to pay, and that I was going to have to find a way to work while traveling. Enter: TEFL certification and teaching English abroad.

Now, I live in Busan, South Korea. I can see the ocean from my window, I eat Korean bbq every week, I spend my weekends and holidays exploring Asia, and I’m living my dream of traveling the world, while simultaneously saving money and paying off loans. This can be you too!

Getting TEFL certified and teaching English abroad opens so many doors. You can get a job essentially anywhere in the world without having to speak the native language, and depending on the country there are so many perks! Here in South Korea, I get free housing, reimbursed flights, severance and a pension, and if you go the public school route, you get 6 weeks of paid vacation. It’s a pretty sweet deal!!

You can learn new languages, immerse yourself in new, exciting cultures, have the experience and adventure of a lifetime, as well as save money while seeing the world! I will always recommend teaching English abroad to those who have been bit by the travel bug, but may not have the means to travel on a whim. There’s absolutely no way I could travel the world like this without having gotten my TEFL certificate.

What is TEFL, and why do I need a

TEFL certificate?

TEFL stands for: Teaching English as a Foreign Language. You may, in your research, also come across other acronyms, such as TESOL or CELTA. While these are technically different certifications, most jobs accept any of the three as a valid certificate to teach in their school.

There are all different kinds of courses, generally divided by the number of hours. In my experience, this is not the actual number of hours it will take you to complete the course, so don’t get freaked out! While the best option is always to go with the highest number of hours you can get, as a general rule of thumb, the 120 hour course is the most universally used TEFL course. The 150 hour course has the potential to get you better jobs, but as long as your resume has experience with kids, tutoring, or teaching of any kind, it doesn’t really matter.

Note: you don’t need any sort of degree or teaching experience to get TEFL certified! Although the extra experience or education focused degree looks good on a job application, it’s not a requirement to take a TEFL course. The only requirement is that you’re 18 years or older as well as a native English speaker! Once you get your certification, it’s for life. No need to ever renew or get re-certified!

If you want to get paid to travel the world and teach English, get valuable international work experience, and have the time of your life, all you need is to get TEFL certified. You can do this easily with ITTT! You can get 20% off any course offering by clicking here.

Is ITTT Legit? an ITTT review

YES! Sifting through all the TEFL course providers is an actual nightmare. Are they scamming you out of your money? Are they actually accredited? Will people hire me if their name is on my resume? These are all questions I was asking myself before I got TEFL certified. You heard it here first: ITTT courses are very reputable. They’ve been around since 1998, and they got voted the Best 2021 TEFL Provider, so when you’re looking for the Best TEFL course in 2022, ITTT is a safe bet. They also have gotten awards for the top rated organization for TEFL certification multiple years in a row. Their courses are very comprehensive, and are more valuable than many other courses offered at a higher price.

What is the best TEFL course option for you?

ITTT offers so many TEFL Courses - but I would recommend the 120 hour course. Anything less, and it eliminates you from the job search for several countries. Some countries or specific cities, however, require the 150 hour course so definitely do some research on where you are interested in teaching English abroad before you make your purchase. In this ITTT review, I’ll mention a few course options worth considering.

120-hour TEFL/TESOL Online Course

The 120 hour TEFL course is by far the most generally popular course! Because it’s online, you can go at your own pace and take up to 6 months to complete it. If you put your head down, however, you can grind it out in a week or two! There are 20 modules, covering everything you need to know to be an effective, fun English teacher. Additionally, with the purchase of any ITTT TEFL course, you gain access to not only these 20 modules of teaching instruction, but also resources on how to find TEFL job vacancies, how to effectively apply for TEFL jobs, interview preparation, as well as TEFL/CV resume writing.

170-hour TEFL/TESOL Online Course

With the pandemic forever changing the way we teach, this course has also become one of ITTT’s top sellers. It certifies you to teach English online, which will be a God-send if you start a job and later have to transition to zoom classes. Additionally, this is a great option if you’re planning on teaching English online as opposed to actually traveling and living in a different country.

I know tons of people who teach through VIPkid or Palfish who have this specific TEFL certification - so this option is also an amazing choice.

220-hour Master Package Online course

This Master Package is ITTT’s best seller! It not only gives you the 120 hour TEFL certification, but a 50-hour course in business English (CTBE)

and a 50-hour course in teaching English to young learners (CTEYL) as well. If I had to go back and do it now, I would’ve done this course! While it is a little pricier, SO MANY English teaching jobs in Asia are at kindergartens or elementary school, and I did feel underprepared to teach such young English learners. Additionally, if you teach somewhere in Europe, evening tutoring sessions with adults is a very common way to make a little extra income, as the European public school programs don’t pay enough to fund your savings. These two certifications open up even more doors, and to me, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. You’ll make back your investment within a month, and you’ll be far more prepared to jump right into teaching, especially if you have no prior experience.

In-person classes

Additionally, ITTT offers in-person classes. If this had been an option for me, I would’ve jumped at the chance! I got certified during peak COVID times, and all the in-person classes were cancelled or postponed. The in-person classes take place all over the world, and are intensive four-week programs. But don’t worry! They organize cultural excursions and activities to go along with the course so it’s an enjoyable experience. The priceless thing about in-person TEFL courses is the ability to practice your teaching and lesson planning abilities, and receive personal feedback. To be honest, when it comes to lesson planning I had no idea what I was getting myself into! This one-on-one feedback would have been incredible. Additionally, you receive a lesson in an unknown language, so that you can empathize with the struggles that new language-learners go through when trying to learn English, which is such a unique and valuable experience!
